I believe (and my knowledge is limited here) that British and American art therapy differs in this respect. Certainly I have been told that British art therapists almost never interpret clients art work, whereas their American counterparts may be more likely to utilize the art work as a diagnostic tool.
This may not be accurate, though, as I say, my knowledge is limited.
