Talking Global Warming Cools Down

"U.S. Senate Report: Over 400 Prominent Scientists Disputed Man-Made Global Warming Claims in 2007

"Senate Report Debunks "Consensus"

"Complete U.S. Senate Report Now Available:
"Complete Report w/out Intro:

"INTRODUCTION:

"Over 400 prominent scientists from more than two dozen countries recently voiced significant objections to major aspects of the so-called "consensus" on man-made global warming. These scientists, many of whom are current and former participants in the UN IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), criticized the climate claims made by the UN IPCC and former Vice President Al Gore.
"The new report issued by the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee's office of the GOP Ranking Member details the views of the scientists, the overwhelming majority of whom spoke out in 2007.

"Even some in the establishment media now appear to be taking notice of the growing number of skeptical scientists. In October, the Washington Post Staff Writer Juliet Eilperin conceded the obvious, writing that climate skeptics "appear to be expanding rather than shrinking." Many scientists from around the world have dubbed 2007 as the year man-made global warming fears "bite the dust." In addition, many scientists who are also progressive environmentalists believe climate fear promotion has "co-opted" the green movement.

"This blockbuster Senate report lists the scientists by name, country of residence, and academic/institutional affiliation. It also features their own words, biographies, and weblinks to their peer reviewed studies and original source materials as gathered from public statements, various news outlets, and websites in 2007. Hey, I told you so too. Recall my prescient post from from over a year ago on 11/28/2006----

Quote:
Christmas and global warming

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is….
Well, it’s that time of year again, a time to consider our blessings . . . but I’m wondering, is “global warming” a fact? Should I be concerned?

Well, the available data for the past 100 years does seem to indicate an upward trend in temperature, especially for recent years/decades; although the data for the past 1,000 years isn’t quite as persuasive; and beyond 1,000 years things really tend to get rather sketchy, although we’re reasonably certain that millions of years ago North Dakota was warm enough to have palm trees and alligators.

Nevertheless, I suppose it’s not terribly unreasonable to connect the current upward trend in temperature with increased human pollution, especially when we factor in the hot air coming from alarmists like Al Gore.

OTOH, considering the unreliability of weather forecasting models for more than a few days into the future, I find projections of large temperature increases over the next 100 years to be less than compelling.

And let’s face it, if the terrorists don’t manage to nuke us into oblivion, or the bird flu doesn’t manage to mutate and destroy us, the unavoidable long-term trend is that the sun is burning out—one way or another, our extinction draweth neigh.

So my advice to the Al Gore crowd is to relax. Breath. Enjoy the season. Sing. And for those that have more of an atheistic bent, here’s a version of Silent Night that may be more to your liking:

Indifferent universe, pitiless universe
No design, no purpose
Blind physical forces and genetic replication
One way or another, we’ll go into extinction
We are an accident
We are an accident

The bad news for Al is that he may have to return that Nobel thingy, which may hurt his chances for another run at the White House; but the good news is that he no longer will have to buy carbon credits to offset his oversized house, his SUVs, and his mindless jetting around the world to promote his idiotic movie and blow hot air up everyone’s ass.

Question Re: Global Warming Cools Down

Oscillation usually contributes to stability. Sometimes a disturbance, a "pertubation" leads to achieving a new point of stability (Kuramoto, 1984). In living creatures, exposure to heat, poison, radiation, and drought lead to increased variation in offspring but in a special way: earlier phenotypes appear, unmasked by the suppression of contemporary features.

Will climate changes do an analogous thing? Will small changes in Earth's heat intake from the sun lead to new plateaux that can also be found in the fossil record? Or in the histories of human cultures?

Meanwhile, Siberia is about to be frozen, Greenland re freezes, and the United States faces oscillations of extreme cold and milder temperatures. This sort of stuff is weird enough to trigger migrations, mass conformity, and democrat victories.

"Russians Brace for Big Chill

"Jan 16, 2008

"Moscow, Russia (AHN) - Russians are bracing for temperatures of as low as minus 55 degrees Celsius (minus 67 degrees Fahrenheit) in Siberia as Russia's emergencies ministry warns on Wednesday of its impending dangers in the coming weeks....Government agencies were placed on high alert, reports AFP. The ministry ordered local administration officials to prepare for the extreme chill expected to last until Jan. 21...Bloomberg reports that worst hit will be the Siberian region of Evenkiya, while neighbor Georgia, whose climate is subtropical, already plunged to as low as minus 35 degrees Celsius. Lake Paliastomi in the western Georgia froze for the first time in 50 years, reports Rustavi-2 television."

"Ice returns as Greenland temps plummet

"Residents insist Greenland's freezing temperatures don't mean global warming has been called off... a brutal cold snap is raging across the semi-autonomous nation of Greenland...On Disko Bay in western Greenland...temperatures have ropped so drastically that the water has frozen over for the first time in a decade...Temperatures plunged to -25°C earlier this month, clogging the bay with ice and making shipping impossible for small crafts, according to Anthon Frederiksen, the mayor of the town of Ilulissat, where Disko Bay is located....'On the other hand, it's an advantage for fishermen who rely on dogsleds for transportation,' Frederiksen said...The mayor cautioned against thinking that the freezing temperature indicated that global warming claims were overblown. He noted that a nearby glacier had retracted more in the past two decades than in recorded history...'We Greenlanders have acclimated to changing conditions over the past 1100 years,' said Frederiksen. 'Temperatures change at regular intervals.'"

So they do....

We may all be in for a rough time as we shunt between igloos and open decks, floods and droughts. Calvin suggested that rapid climate changes drove the emergence of human intelligence. If so, the species may be about to gain another 20 points! I also remain skeptical that buying mercury bulbs or giving Algore $100 million will make anything better.

Question "The Great Global Warming Swindle"

This film, first aired by the BBC last March, is still praised or damned in today's news. It runs 75 minutes.

Did the fellows who sold tulip bulbs also challenge skepticism from fellow Hollanders? Probably.

Is global warming the sort of hypothesis that bends its story to fit whatever data emerge? Certainly. Fresh ice in Greenland is consistent with global warming; so is the systematic decline in hurricanes over the past decades.

Contradiction: The BBC, often called "Auntie" by the Brits, is usually left of center in its work. Further, Gore will make a billion and, while either a hero or nuts, now has the best time of his life.

JimB

"The Great Global Warming Swindle is a controversial documentary film that argues against the scientific consensus that human activity is the main cause of global warming. The film, made by British television producer Martin Durkin showcases scientists, economists, politicians, writers, and others who are sceptical of the scientific consensus on anthropogenic global warming. The programme's publicity materials assert that man-made global warming is "a lie" and "the biggest scam of modern times."

Exclamation "The Sun Also Sets"

We all pick the news we want and I think, in regard to this issue and many others, competing swarms buzz around each other. Scare us, invade us, starve us, or jump the cost of our fuels and we vibrate together just as if bosons...

"Climate Change: Not every scientist is part of Al Gore's mythical "consensus." Scientists worried about a new ice age seek funding to better observe something bigger than your SUV — the sun...Back in 1991, before Al Gore first shouted that the Earth was in the balance, the Danish Meteorological Institute released a study using data that went back centuries that showed that global temperatures closely tracked solar cycles...To many, those data were convincing. Now, Canadian scientists are seeking additional funding for more and better "eyes" with which to observe our sun, which has a bigger impact on Earth's climate than all the tailpipes and smokestacks on our planet combined...And they're worried about global cooling, not warming."

Default Global Warming: "Baptist All-Stars"

The Warming religion goes back to church!

JimB

"The Baptist All-Stars

"By NAOMI SCHAEFER RILEY

"February 8, 2008

"Perhaps the only thing worse than Al Gore's tedious 90-minute slide presentation on global warming is the same presentation interspersed with slides quoting from Scripture. But that's just what the audience of 2,500 at the Celebration of a New Baptist Covenant paid $35 a head to see on Jan. 31.

"Mr. Gore, a featured speaker at the gathering here, was introduced as a 'prophet.' Like all prophets, he 'is not welcome in his hometown,' at least according to Robert Parham, executive director of the Baptist Center of Ethics in Nashville. Mr. Parham noted with disappointment that the people of that city failed to 'recognize Mr. Gore's recent Nobel Prize victory. Talk about a cross to bear.

'Mr. Gore's presentation was officially closed to the media, because,' according to a Covenant spokesman, 'the former vice president didn't want the slides of those Bible passages 'getting out on the Internet."

What would his friends in the secular blogosphere think about the fact that he said 'In the beginning, God created Heaven and earth' as a picture of our planet from space was displayed? Or that he used the story of Noah to explain why we should work to save more endangered species?"

Talking "Forget global warming..."

Power laws describe self-organized networks: expect many more very large events and zillions of small ones while you forget bell curves. Weather has properties of a self-organizing system. The coin spins...

"Forget global warming: Welcome to the new Ice Age
"Lorne Gunter, National Post Published: Monday, February 25, 2008

"... And it's not just anecdotal evidence that is piling up against the climate-change dogma.

"According to Robert Toggweiler of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at Princeton University and Joellen Russell, assistant professor of biogeochemical dynamics at the University of Arizona -- two prominent climate modellers -- the computer models that show polar ice-melt cooling the oceans, stopping the circulation of warm equatorial water to northern latitudes and triggering another Ice Age (a la the movie The Day After Tomorrow) are all wrong.

"We missed what was right in front of our eyes," says Prof. Russell. It's not ice melt but rather wind circulation that drives ocean currents northward from the tropics. Climate models until now have not properly accounted for the wind's effects on ocean circulation, so researchers have compensated by over-emphasizing the role of manmade warming on polar ice melt..."

Arrow Collectivism & Warming

Models from statistical physics (Bianconi & Barabasi, 2000; Barabasi, 2002; Csermely, 2006; Brody, 2003, 2006, 2008) predict collapse of scale-free organizations into winner-take-all as a response to stress and resource scarcity. In human terms: invasions, famines, droughts, and disease increase the probability of swarming. It's happened in Russia, China, Germany, Britain, and the United States. One tactic for a group in power is to exaggerate such threats or to let them go unattended. The United States, for example, has approximately 500 years of coal, even if it were all converted into liquid forms.

One could see conservationists as wanting one world of near equals instead of an emergent network of multiple hubs. Restricting the assets of major players should work in their direction. On the other hand, simply restricting supplies makes it more likely they remain in power for doing a "good" thing...

Arrow Hockey Stick on the Hot Seat?

John Coleman, founder of the Weather Channel, wants to debate Algore but failing that goal, Coleman wants to sue him for fraud. I happen to believe that Gore himself believes the story that he assembled but he, like other idealists, planners, and prophets, may have attracted thugs to his cause.

Gazzaniga (1998) and Pinker (2003) tell us that the left side of our brain can act as a "spin doctor" but few people appreciate how the right side might find repetition and predictability where there is none (Goldberg, 2001). Your left mind can be seen as a "patter-maker" rather than as a spin doctor and your right as a "pattern-maker"! (Brody, 2008)

Meanwhile, from the Washington Times:

"Climate panel on the hot seat

"By H. Sterling Burnett

"March 14, 2008

"...in 2006 Congress requested an independent analysis....A panel of statisticians chaired by Edward J. Wegman, of George Mason University, found significant problems with the methods of statistical analysis used by the researchers and with the IPCC's peer review process. For example, the researchers who created the hockey stick used the wrong time scale to establish the mean temperature to compare with recorded temperatures of the last century. Because the mean temperature was low, the recent temperature rise seemed unusual and dramatic. This error was not discovered in part because statisticians were never consulted.

"Furthermore, the community of specialists in ancient climates from which the peer reviewers were drawn was small and many of them had ties to the original authors — 43 paleoclimatologists had previously coauthored papers with the lead researcher who constructed the hockey stick.
"These problems led Mr. Wegman's team to conclude that the idea that the planet is experiencing unprecedented global warming "cannot be supported."

"The IPCC published its Fourth Assessment Report in 2007 predicting global warming will lead to widespread catastrophe if not mitigated, yet failed to provide the most basic requirement for effective climate policy: accurate temperature statistics. A number of weaknesses in the measurements include the fact temperatures aren't recorded from large areas of the Earth's surface and many weather stations once in undeveloped areas are now surrounded by buildings, parking lots and other heat-trapping structures resulting in an urban-heat-island effect."

Talking Argo Nots

Oscillations - in economics or in meteorology - are common. The problem lies in frequencies and intensities and whether a change has occurred in either. The Argos consist of about 3000 subs, each of them about the size of a fence post, that transmit temperature information about 40 times per year. They can't find global warming but this chapter is still open...Mackay, anyone?
JimB

"Perhaps The Climate Change Models Are Wrong

"Lorne Gunter, National Post Published: Monday, March 24, 2008

"When they were first deployed in 2003, the Argos were hailed for their ability to collect information on ocean conditions more precisely, at more places and greater depths and in more conditions than ever before. No longer would scientists have to rely on measurements mostly at the surface from older scientific buoys or inconsistent shipboard monitors...So why are some scientists now beginning to question the buoys' findings? Because in five years, the little blighters have failed to detect any global warming (emph added, JB) .

"They are not reinforcing the scientific orthodoxy of the day, namely that man is causing the planet to warm dangerously. They are not proving the predetermined conclusions of their human masters. Therefore they, and not their masters' hypotheses, must be wrong...In fact, "there has been a very slight cooling," according to a U.S. National Public Radio (NPR) interview with Josh Willis at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a scientist who keeps close watch on the Argo findings.... 'It may be that we are in a period of less rapid warming,' Dr. Willis told NPR...Yeah, you know, like when you put your car into reverse you are causing it to enter a period of less rapid forward motion. Or when I gain a few pounds I am in a period of less rapid weight loss."
